The University of Missouri Texas County Extension will conduct a foods preservation class from 5 to 7 p.m., Mondays, June 13, 20 and 27, at the Houston Community Kitchen at the Lone Star Annex on Main Street.
Entitled “So Easy to Preserve,” the class is designed for people who are new to food preservation, but it would also be a good refresher course for more experienced people. Preservation topics covered in the class will include pressure canning, pickling and canning salsa and fruit.
The classes will be taught by MU Extension nutrition specialists Stephanie Johnson and Cammie Younger. The fee for the first two sessions is $20 each, which covers the cost of supplies. Participants will be able to take home some of the foods canned in the classes.
The final class in the series, canning salsa and fruit, is being offered free through a Healthy Schools Healthy Communities grant administered through the Texas County Health Department. Door prizes will be available during this session.
The maximum class size for all sessions is 10 people. If necessary, a waiting list will be kept. If enough people sign up, a second set of sessions will be scheduled.
To register, or for more information, stop by the Extension office in Houston or call 417-967-4545.
