The City of Houston will hire a Jefferson City engineering firm to develop plans to upgrade the Houston Memorial Airport, the Houston City Council decided Monday.
Plans call for widening a taxi lane and construction of seven 33 x 42 foot box hangars east of ones most recently constructed. Monies for the engineering work — about $5,000 — are in the 2016 city budget.
In other matters, council members:
•Heard plans for a rehabilitation of one property on the city’s property renovation or demolition list. The business tract is at Walnut and Second Street. Terry Snelling is purchasing the structure, and the city says it includes cleanup of property east of the building. The city has granted one year to complete the project.
•Will order a backup pump for the Houston Municipal Swimming Pool at a cost of $4,510. The current one is 10 years old –– two years beyond the normal lifespan of eight. Issues with another mechanical component closed the pool two days last week.
•Heard from Councilman David Arthur that he has sold property on Houston’s south side for a new restaurant. The Ramsey family, which previously operated Grandma’s Kitchen at Highway B and U.S. 63, plan to construct a building south of Miller’s Grill. Negotiations are ongoing with another party for another piece of property nearby.
•Learned that the city’s annual asphalt improvement project would begin in late July or early August.
•Listened to Arthur call for further input on the city’s water fluoridation program.
The council’s next meeting is July 5.
