Cabbage, squash and onions grow heartily behind a container of gardening tools in May inside the Texas County Jail Garden high tunnel greenhouse next to the Texas County Justice Center in Houston. A workshop is planned in August at Mountain Grove.

Missouri State University will hold a greenhouse and high tunnel workshop in collaboration with University of Missouri Extension and Lincoln University. The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 3-4, at the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station at Mountain Grove.

Topics and features include:

•Basic greenhouse construction/operation

•Hydroponics and soilless food crop production in greenhouses

•Trap cropping and biological control for pest management in high tunnels

•Greenhouse insect and disease management

•Year-round production of hydroponic fresh leafy greens in greenhouses

•Fertigation and fertilizer proportioning

•Bedding plant production

•Greenhouse and high tunnel tomato production

•High tunnel production of greens

•Overview of high tunnel fruit production

To see a fully functional high tunnel, there is one on the north side of the Texas County Justice Center,  USDA Rural Development funded through a collaboration of Downtown Houston Inc. and the Texas County Commission. Texas County Master Gardeners operate it with inmates at the Texas County Jail.
