HHS senior Nathan Poynter signed a letter of intent with the Hannibal-LeGrange baseball team. Seated alongside him are his parents, Kevin and Alison Reed. Behind Poynter is HLGU head coach Ben Strother and Poynter's sister, Madi Reed.

Nathan Poynter will continue his baseball career in college.

Poynter, a 2016 Houston High School graduate, recently signed a letter of intent with Hannibal-LaGrange University. His career will begin with the Trojans in the fall.

“He is a high-character young man first and foremost,” HLGU head coach Ben Strother said. “We see and value his versatility as a position player and pitcher and believe he will be a great fit within our baseball program and institution. We see him getting bigger and stronger in the next couple years and are excited to have the opportunity to see him develop in our baseball program.”

Poynter, a starting shortstop and pitcher, was one of the key players for the 2016 HHS baseball team that finished with an 11-14 record. He ranked third on the team with a .311 batting average while scoring a team-leading 20 runs. His 23 hits ranked second on the team, and he easily led the Tigers with 15 stolen bases.

On the mound, Poynter led HHS with a 3.60 ERA while going 3-6. He had a team-high 55 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings pitched.

Hannibal-LaGrange is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) university and member of the American Midwest Conference featuring 13 schools. The Trojans were 6-42 last season.
