TEXAS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Texas County Genealogical and Historical Society met June 10 at St Mark’s Catholic Church in Houston.
Larry Wood of Joplin was the speaker on “Notorious Incidents of the Ozarks.” Women often were drawn in to assist their husbands, brothers and other family who needed help in some of the unlawful incidents. They were called “Bushwacker Belles.”
Belle Starr, Bonnie Parker, Sally Rand and Bertha Gifford were some of those brought to mind. The murder of the Parsons family near Boiling Springs, and the hanging of Jody Hamilton was an incident that was remembered by all. All were sad to hear but a part of our Ozark history.
