The annual Texas County Library kids summer reading program began July at continues through the month.

The program an athletic theme and is titled, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!”

A record 90 kids are enrolled in the program this year at the Houston branch, up from 35 in 2015.

Library director Molly Shelton said the program’s activities will be based on exercise and physical activity, and many sessions will be held outdoors. Shelton said donations for prizes to be given away at the end of the program in Houston are welcome (especially because of the high enrollment number), and that individuals, businesses and organizations can purchase items or provide funds and so library personnel can make the purchase.

Landmark Bank has already provided bicycles and Progressive Ozark Bank has donated tablets.

Participants in Summersville library’s “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” summer reading program will on Friday (July 8) be visited by a member of the University of Missouri Texas County Extension.

Dana McGuire will show the children how to make healthy smoothies, but not in the traditional way because a blender is attached to a bicycle’s front tire and works off of “pedal power.”

On Monday (July 11), Miss Texas County Hailey Dodson will bring her “wacky workout” to the Summersville library. She asks that children join her in dressing “wacky” by wearing mismatched clothing, socks and other clothing.

After the workout demonstration, she will help the children to craft personalized headbands to take home.
