Parasites and the diseases they carry not only cause pain and discomfort for your pet, but can also lead to serious health issues.

Summer is the time to be outside, enjoying the warm weather and fresh air with family, friends and pets. While humans use sunscreen and bug spray to protect themselves, pets are often left defenseless when outside. Parasites and the diseases they carry not only cause pain and discomfort for your pet, but can also lead to serious health issues.

The Animal Medical Center of Mid-America offers these tips to help protect pets from parasites.

•BE THE WATCH DOG:  External parasites like fleas and ticks can be easy to spot, especially if pets begin scratching or chewing more than normal or showing signs of hair loss. Bites from mosquitoes and mites can cause similar discomfort. Pay attention to these different symptoms associated with parasites and keep pets well-groomed for their comfort as well as health.

•IT’S THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS: Internal parasites, such as tapeworms and hookworms, do not always cause visible symptoms. Sometimes pets will experience vomiting, diarrhea or unexpected weight loss. The best way to find and prevent internal parasites is by taking pets to the veterinarian at least once a year for routine screenings.

•THE BEST BET? THE VET: Unfortunately, there is no cure-all for parasites. The appropriate treatment depends on the situation. While over-the-counter treatments may seem quick and easy, they can often be too harsh and ineffective while ignoring underlying diseases that may be present. Talk with the family veterinarian about any concerns, and ask about year-round protection for pets.

•KEEP IT CLEAN: Avoid the transfer of parasites and diseases among animals and humans by covering sandboxes and other play areas when not in use, washing hands often, cleaning up after pets and keeping pets on a leash or behind a fence to avoid contact with unknown furry friends.
