Just days before the start of a new school year, the Houston school board made several employment decisions at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
Hired as employees for the 2016-’17 school year, which begins Thursday, were:
•Abby Gaither, bus driver.
•Joe Montgomery, part-time bus maintenance up to 550 hours.
•Robert Hart, part-time custodian.
•Amber Lange and Brett Kelley, high school student council co-sponsors. They will split the $1,400 stipend.
•Shawn “Derrion” Donson, high school special education paraprofessional.
•Rod Gorman, high school physical education and head boys’ basketball coach. He was hired under critical shortage.
•Gerald McGownd, assistant high school boys’ basketball coach.
Also at the meeting, board members:
•Approved the substitute teacher list for the school year. They are: Alycia Austin, Gerald Barrett, Dustin Bell, Darrell Colborn, Kaitlyn Cook, Dorman “Perry” Dobson, Dee Dee Dunn, LeAnn Edington, Ila Jean Farris, Janie Fraser-Giddens, Donna Hoggatt, Chris Honeycutt, Mona Huffman, Reta Ice, Falisha McVicker, Ashley Miller, Victoria Miller, David Moerbe, Michael Moore, Karen Parker, Jan Perryman, Judy Rouse, Clint Severe, Wendy Scholtz, Kent Swearengin, Arthur Thomas, Barbara Thomas and Jo Williamson.
•Set the tax rate at $3.55 ($2.75 incidental and $0.80 debt service) for the coming year. The numbers are unchanged from the previous year.
•Approved a summer school evaluation from Jody Jarrett, elementary principal. Jarrett wants to have discussions about putting a greater emphasis on academics during the program.
•Heard special recognition from Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent, as he thanked Jason Pounds (FFA), Shelly Mutzebaugh (FCCLA) and McGownd (boys’ basketball) for assisting students in those organizations over the summer.
