TEXAS COUNTY FARM BUREAU DINNER
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Texas County Farm Bureau held its annual steak dinner for its members.
The food was great. The steaks were perfectly done and the potluck items brought in by the members were of a large variety, but the desserts took the cake!
Incumbent board members John Casey, Hank Grosenbacher and Andy Sadano were re-elected; and Steve Root and Mike Daniels were also elected as board members.
President Don Luerssen told of his recent trip to Washington, D.C., as part of what has become known as “Honor Flights.” He was part of a caravan of 10 motor homes carrying 200 veterans to the many historic sights honoring the heroes.
Hank Grosenbacher conducted an auction of a number of items donated by board members and more than $500 was added to the scholarship fund for the coming year.
Preparations are underway for the Ag-Expo on Oct. 4, where all the fourth graders of Texas County schools are invited to the fairgrounds.
About 20 booths will be set up discussing many of the varied topics concerning agriculture and wildlife. More info on this topic will be released later.
TEXAS COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL PERSONNEL
The Texas County Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel met Sept. 12 in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church in Houston.
Twenty members enjoyed a lunch provided by the refreshment committee.
The devotion was given by Elaine Campbell. Theme was Philippians 4:4 — “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.”
Things we should do each day: Be happy, pray for others, help somebody and take a nap.
The program was presented by Sharon Tyger, manager of Opportunity Sheltered Industries in Houston. It has five fulltime staff members and 32 employees. She presented the requirements for employment, the government regulations that must be followed, and the types of work it offers.
The business meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag led by President Jay Frost. Secretary report was read and approved. Treasurer report was read and approved with a balance of $688.
Forty-three members have paid dues for 2016.
There were 65 canned goods donated by members. These will be distributed in Cabool
President Frost read a letter from “The Imagination Library” organization that provides books to preschool children. It was approved to send $25 to sponsor one child for this program.
Legislative chairman, Paul Meier, reported on the state meeting he and the president attended. Legislative Day is Feb. 15 in Jefferson City. MRTA members are urged to attend and support legislation concerning education.
President Frost reported that Wilda McNiell was selected as Distinguished Retiree for Region 10. She will receive recognition at the Region 10 meeting Oct. 21 in Springfield.
It was approved to select McNiell as the club’s voting delegate for the state meeting, which she and the president will attend.
Members were asked to notify the president by Oct. 10 if they would be attending the Region 10 meeting.
Cost for the meeting is $15.
Joyce Jones is preparing an item for the silent auction.
McNiell announced a Region 10 meeting is Nov. 4 for all unit chairpersons. The time and place of meeting will be announced later.
The next meeting is Oct. 10.
