The Houston High School volleyball team competed Saturday against a field of larger schools at the Rolla Tournament.

The Lady Tigers went 0-3-1 with losses to Rolla, West Plains and Osage as well as a split with Waynesville.

Houston won the opening set against Waynesville in pool play.

“We played tough against West Plains and Rolla and competed until the very end. We played our best game against a good Waynesville team,” HHS coach Loran Richardson said. “I’m proud of the way the girls battled against bigger schools and continued to compete.”

Richardson said she continues to encourage the Lady Tigers (1-20-1) to play hard as the end of the season approaches.

“We still have games left on our schedule we can win,” she said. “I keep telling the girls to fight until the very end. That’s all I ask is that we compete with everything we’ve got.”

Emily Shea led HHS with 10 kills at the tournament. Alexis Choate had eight assists. Alyssa Hayes had four blocks.

Junior Sevanna Rowland had team highs of 45 digs and two aces.

Last Thursday, Houston lost in straight sets at Willow Springs to fall to 0-4 in the South Central Association.

Hayes had two kills and a pair of blocks. Chloe Hunninghake had two assists.

Last Tuesday, Shea had 10 kills and 11 digs in a road loss at Ava. Hunninghake had 10 assists. Hayes added three blocks.

“The girls are fighting. We aren’t giving up,” Richardson said. “The momentum is going to swing our way if we keep working hard day in and day out.”

JUNIOR VARSITY: The JV Lady Tigers earned their third victory of the season last Tuesday with a straight sets win at Ava.

The team had 20 kills and 14 aces.

“They played consistent and tough,” Richardson said. “It was a great win.”
