The Houston volleyball team won the opening set of its match Thursday night at Conway but couldn’t close out its first win.

“We looked really great the first set,” Lady Tigers coach Loran Richardson said. “The girls were playing hard, communicating and flowing well. It was like night and day the next two sets. We lost the momentum and could never get it back.”

The Lady Tigers lost 23-25, 25-13, 25-9.

“Once we learn how to put together two strong sets and keep the momentum,” Richardson said, “we are going to do great things.”

Alexis Choate had eight assists to lead Houston (0-9). Alyssa Hayes had four blocks. Sevanna Rowland and Emily Shea had five digs apiece.

“It’s tough for some of the older girls. I’m the third coach in three years, and they are trying to figure things out,” Richardson said. “Plus, we have a lot of inexperienced girls. Those two variables together make it tough to smooth things out.

“But we are working hard and will continue to improve. We have to be patient to get to where we want.”

The Houston JV lost in two sets. Houston won a one set “B” game 25-13.

“The younger girls are doing a great job,” Richardson said, “and I see improvement every day.”
