To the editor:
The Texas County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is asking for the public’s participation in serving on the local board.
As a business owner or citizen you play an integral part in the development of plans that addresses any HAZMAT issues in the county.
The LEPC is mandated by the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (also known as Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act.) Any business or agency that uses, holds or stores any type of hazardous material is obligated to report the quantity and type of material they use.
Through Tier II reports, they must pay a sum of money to the state that is then refunded back to the county, in portion, for training of the local fire departments that are required to respond to HAZMAT spills and exposures. The money can also be used for equipment and supplies to aid in the initial spill response process.
The next meeting of the Texas County LEPC is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Nov. 1, at the Texas County Justice Center in Houston.
