Houston’s park authority voted to take further steps in applying for federal funds to assist in the construction of a city park. The proposed site covers a six and one-half acre tract extending from Third Street to U.S. 63 in the east part of town.

The United Fund goal was reached. Donations surpassed the goal of $4,000. The committee in charge was composed of the Rev. John Mathews, Sam Yarnall and Clydie Evans. The total eventually will reach about $4,500, it predicted, about $500 over 1965’s collection.

The chamber of commerce announced a “Merrie Christmas Taxi” service as part of the holiday shopping season. The service will provide free rides from a high school parking lot to and from the downtown area. Three mobile vans will be employed on eight-minute routes from the large parking lot east of the school gym.

The Houston Tigers won their second straight victory by defeating Rolla 74-39. The Tigers racked up 42 points in the first half.

The chamber of commerce and the City of Houston announced the co-sponsorship of a Christmas home decoration contest.

There will be two categories — outside and door decorations — with a total of $135 in prize money.

Joe E. Richards, a native of Plato, was first place in a field of 34 shooters in the International Trap Shoot at Wiesbaden, Germany.

Richards dropped the first target and then broke the remaining 99 without a miss.
