Dealing with invasive noxious weeds like the spotted knapweed will be the main topic of discussion at a Texas County Advisory Board meeting set for Monday (Jan. 30).

The Texas County Advisory Board will conduct its quarterly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday (Jan. 30) in the meeting room at the Texas County Justice Center (on Grand Avenue in Houston).

Board chairman Jack Watson said the main topic of discussion will be invasive noxious weeds, and representatives of MFA will be on hand as featured speakers. The county advisory board is made up of board members from Texas County’s 17 townships.

“We’ve had a lot of response from the last time we did this, so we’ve decided to do it again,” Watson said.

MFA personnel are expected to offer advice regarding the accidental spreading of noxious weeds by township road maintenance crews.

“They suspect that the townships are spreading some of these through road grading,” Watson said. “I had never given it a thought until they mentioned that. But it makes sense, so I hope to get all the township road graders there so they can hear this, too.

“I know we have a problem with this, so we need to address it and either agree what we can do about it or that we don’t know what we can do about it.”

Watson said local farmer Julius Fraley will also attend the meeting and will share his extensive knowledge on dealing with noxious weeds.

“He’s probably as knowledgeable as anyone in Texas County,” Watson said.

The public is invited to attend.
