Military veteran

William “Bill” James Meusch, 81, of Tallahassee, Fla., passed away Jan 28, 2017.

He was born June 21, 1935, in Overland, son of Henry William and Lottie Leola Newman Meusch.

He graduated from Houston High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and earned his master’s degree from the University of Missouri Columbia.

He served in the Navy, participating in several expeditions, including the 1954-55 Navy Scientific USS Atka Icebreaker Expedition to the South Pole and traveled throughout the world, including the North Pole.

Following service to his country, he taught in the Missouri public education system and was employed by and retired from the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Fla. After retirement, he was a literacy volunteer, actively involved in AmeriCorps, contributing to the reading skills of many young children.

He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, canoeing and quail hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Evelyn C. Meusch; two children, Jennifer Meusch and Michael Meusch; a grandson; three siblings, Margaret Meusch Shelton, Lawrence Meusch and Mary Meusch Bailey.

Services were Friday, Feb. 3, at Abbey Funeral Home. Burial was in Tallahassee National Cemetery.
