An organization that has worked toward the betterment of the Houston community for more than 40 years is holding its annual membership drive.
The Community Betterment and Arts Council (CBAC) of Houston last year took second place in both a statewide community contest and in the youth category.
It has several projects planned for this year:
•Working with youth, city police and Texas County 911 to provide address numbers on houses and businesses.
•Assisting with the completion of the Melba Theatre in downtown Houston.
•Continuing progress on renovations to the historical Lynch-Tweed House, the oldest structure in Houston that dates to the Civil War.
•Showing community progress.
•Providing a fine arts concert or drama presentation.
Throughout the year, the CBAC Y.O.U.T.H. group (Youth Organization Understanding Tomorrow’s Houston) assists in several activities, including the annual Easter egg hunt, Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, Share Your Christmas and other projects. Youth members also attend the annual state conference.
Community Betterment also sponsors the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program in the Houston School District and provides a monthly book by mail to children from birth until they begin kindergarten. It also provides two $750 scholarships to Houston High School graduates.
Membership fees are $25 for businesses and $10 for an individual/family. Meetings are at 12:30 p.m. the third Monday monthly at the Houston Senior Center. To join, send the fee and the following information to Kim Bittle, CBAC, P.O. Box 222, Houston, Mo. 65483
Officers are: Elaine Campbell, president and project manager; Wilda McNiell, vice president; Judy Rouse, secretary; and Kim Bittle, treasurer. Others on the board are: Sally Smith, Imagination Library; Amber Lange, youth sponsor; Primrose Casey, Shannon Nunnery and Ted Scroggins, maintenance.Â
