Members of the Houston City Council held a public meeting Tuesday on possible zoning changes on West Highway 17 and named four residents to a housing board.
Ten persons attended the hearing that sought input on the possibility of changes in the city’s zoning ordinance.
Following input from the Houston Planning and Zoning Commission, the council is considering designating several tracts as highway business district. The areas affected are on the north side of Highway 17 from Dooley Street to the city limits and property on the south side of Highway 17 from Highway 17 Terrace to the city limits.
The city says the designation wouldn’t have any affect on taxes until the use of the property changes.
The council took no action after its public hearing.
In other matters, members:
—Ratified a decision to appoint Lois England, Roxie Sponsler, Beverly St. John and Johna Kozemczak to the Houston Housing Authority board until May. The board will reorganize at that time. The board is the governing body for elderly housing situated off Chestnut Street and north of there, as well  as low-income housing at Skyview Terrace.
—Approved terms of a resolution that outlines the city’s permission for CableAmerica to use its poles to attach wires. The contract spells out fees for the first five years and terms that cover years 6-10 and 11-15. Â
—Amended a purchase policy following a review related to the city’s bus system. The change brings the city in compliance with all federal guidelines.
