The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a burn workshop for area landowners on how to set up and conduct a controlled burn safely.

The program is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the USDA Service Center on South U.S. 63 near Steve’s Tire and Arpco Pump.

Lesly Holt, private land conservationist, said prescribed burning is used to improve habitat for quail and other small game species as well as controlling weeds, brush and help insure diversity of plants in the wildlife food chain. She said it is also an important tool used in maintaining and improving native grasses.

The purpose of the workshop is to help landowners evaluate when the best conditions exist and how to use them in a safe manner to achieve the desired results.

The class is limited to 20 attendees. For more information or to register, call 800-879-8894, ext. 3, or 417-967-2028, ext. 3.
