Wilbur “Monk” Vernon Mayfield, 97,passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at Texas County Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Mountain Grove, Andrew J. and Margaret Hurtt Mayfield. He and May Bolinger were married June 15, 1940, in Mountain Grove. She passed away Jan. 30, 2009.

He was a carpenter for many years, building houses and commercial buildings in the West Plains and Mountain Grove areas.

He was an avid fisherman and loved to camp. He also enjoyed buying and selling, whether it was a camper, boat, car or fishing reel. He was enjoyed playing cards.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, May; and six siblings, Ben, Louise, Louis, Betty, Mary and Hobart Lee.

Survivors include two children, Ron Mayfield of Ozark and Gail Carter Gene of Mountain Grove; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Bud Mayfield of Thornfield, Don Mayfield and Bill Mayfield of Mountain Grove; and many other relatives and friends.

Services are Friday, Feb. 24, at Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Edwin Carter officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mountain Grove.
