Five games into the season, the Houston baseball team is still searching for its first victory.
The Tigers fell to 0-5 last week with four losses in the Houston Tournament sponsored by State Farm Insurance.
HHS had its strongest showing in the finale Friday against Salem, which won the tournament. The Tigers had a 3-0 lead –– their first advantage of the season –– and scored a season-high four runs.
But five errors cost Houston as Salem scored 14 of the game’s final 15 runs for a 14-4 victory.
HHS senior Cameron Root was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss. Gavin Alston, Trevor Motzkus and Ty McCloud also had one hit apiece.
Motzkus gave up five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in the loss. He walked five and struck out three.
Last Thursday, Alston had a pair of hits and knocked in the team’s lone run in a 15-1 loss to defending state champion Mountain Grove.
Braedin Groff surrendered 10 runs –– four earned –– in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss. He walked three.
Nick Swanson scored on Alson’s run-scoring single.
The previous day, Josh Hurst had the Tigers’ only hit in a 16-0 defeat against Licking.
Freshman Sterling Jackson gave up five hits and eight earned runs in the loss. He walked five and struck out five.
