GARDEN CLUB
The Houston Garden Club met April 4 at the First Baptist Church in Houston.
The meeting was called to order by President Verlene. Jan led the group with the pledge of allegiance and the club’s collect.
This month’s program was “Deer Resistant Plants” given by Barbara. There was discussion of different plants and how they grow in shade and sun.
Last month’s minutes and treasury report were read and approved.
Yard of the Month:
• There was discussion about the procedure for picking the yard of the month.
• Roxanne, Barbara and Janet will go out the week of April 10.
Planting Seeds with Kindergarteners:
• Jan is waiting to hear back from the school.
• There was discussion on what seeds should be planted.
• It was suggested that members plant seeds in a clear cup ahead of time so that kids can see the roots growing.
Plant and Bake Sale
• Reminder to get plantings made.
• Reminder to bake.
• Sale is from 8 a.m. to noon, April 29
• Janet will make flyers to advertise.
Meeting Time:
• It was decided that members meet at 1 p.m. starting with the May meeting.
Roll call was answered with garden tips. Eight members attended the meeting. The most favorite garden tip was putting a coffee filter in the bottom of planters to keep the dirt from seeping out.
The meeting was adjourned with a devotional reading and a drawing for door prizes. Refreshments were provided by Janet.
GAMMA PHI CHAPTER
The Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met April 8 at the Cabool United Methodist Church. President Mary Jane Lybyer reminded members of the upcoming Delta state meeting April 21-23 and the 2017 Delta state leadership seminar June 17.
Joyce Jones, scholarship committee member, presented the names of three recipients chosen from 11 applicants who will receive $500 Grant-In-Aid scholarships from Gamma Phi: Cherokee Carney, Cassidy Crewse and Kelsey Walton, all from Willow Springs.
The Cabool members led the program with guest speakers, Shelia Carroll and Sonie Trotter, of Cabool sharing their CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) knowledge and experience of volunteering in Texas County. CASA started in 1977 for people to lend their voice to assist children in the court system. They shared information about required training and responsibilities of volunteers. Jeanette Hale, a Cabool member, shared a devotion, “Faith Through Time of Transition.” Wendy Inman, Cabool High School band instructor, and students presented special music. Brante Copling sang, “Till There Was You” from Music Man; Hayden Casper sang “Let Me Fly” and performed trumpet solo pieces by Henry Purcell; and Adam Block played a tuba solo, “Rocked in the Cradle of The Deep” by E. DeLamateur.
Members enjoyed a luncheon prepared by the Cabool United Methodist Eunice Whittaker Circle. Lunch was a potato bar with all the fixings and a desert and coffee bar. The tables were decorated by Joyce Jones with an Easter theme of white washed bunnies, African violets, Easter grass and candy.
The summer planning meeting will meet July 8 at Rockbridge. Houston Gamma Phi members include: Elaine Campbell, Janice Lay, Mary Jane Lybyer, Sherry Gatlin, Dara Jackson, Diane Moore, Judy Rouse, Mary Stottlemyre, Maygen Ward and Terisa Ward.
