A team record for stolen bases in a single game — and top 10 performance in state history — led Houston to its second straight win.
The Tigers swiped 18 bases last Tuesday night during a 15-6 victory at Summersville.
The total is the most in team history and among the most in a single game in Missouri history. The state record is 28 – set by Dora in 2005 against Couch. Houston’s 18 tied Stoutland for eighth-most all-time.
HHS senior Tyler Burris stole five bases for the second straight day to lead the Tigers’ thievery. Gavin Alston has three steals while four others – Hunter Stilley, Cameron Root, Kaleb Silveus and Trevor Motzkus – had two apiece.
The Tigers were 18-for-22 in steal attempts and are now 77-for-86 on the season. Burris has a teamleading 21 steals.
Houston (5-14) trailed 5-3 before scoring four times in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Sterling Jackson had a two-run single to tie it and Cameron Root followed with a two-run single to center.
Jackson’s RBI double and a run-scoring groundout by Root in the sixth put Houston ahead 9-5. Burris followed with a bases-loaded walk to put HHS ahead by five.
Root was 3-for-4 with four RBIs as part of Houston’s 12-hit attack. Jackson, who knocked in two runs, and Nick Swanson had two hits apiece.
Swanson allowed one run over four innings in relief for the victory. He struck out four and walked one.
