Youth Centers, sponsored by the Extension Department, opened at Houston and Summersville. The purpose is to provide recreation for area youths. Houston’s program will be under the direction of Ann Hart and Elaine Kruse; at Summersville, Robert Derryberry and Mary Ann Armfield.
Three new teachers have been hired by the Houston school system. They are: W.J. and Edna Wheatley, math and elementary grade; and Ronald Cummins, junior high coach.
Houston School Superintendent Leslie McDaniel said only one bid had been received on a house constructed by the school’s carpentry class. The amount was $9,100 and was rejected.
Superintendent McDaniel, at the chamber of commerce meeting, pointed out the need for a nursing home in Houston. He outlined information received at a meeting he attended the week before at Licking. Appointed to the steering committee to represent Houston were Millard Willson and Linville C. Hardin. The committee will investigate and report interest in nursing homes in Texas County.
Everybody liked it last year, so it will be repeated July 4. A fireworks display will be presented at the ballpark. Merchants will underwrite the cost and members of the fire department will be in charge of the display.
County Librarian Louise Johnson announced that a loan of 375 books has been made to the county library from the Missouri State Library. The list includes hard-to-find and out-of-print books.
Laclede County will soon vote on a proposition to establish a county nursing home. The levy will be 15 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation.
