Discover Nature Fishing is an outdoor, fishing curriculum from 9 a.m. until noon taught by Missouri Department of Conservation. Youth and families can learn the basics of fishing.

Youth ages 7-15 accompanied by at least one adult, as well as entire families can register. The adult can simply be a chaperone for the participant, or can register to participate in the class as well. Discover Nature Fishing is NOT limited to children; the whole family is welcome and encouraged.

Lessons will take about an hour-and-a-half, organizers said, followed by hands on fishing until noon. Participants can bring a picnic lunch and chairs or a blanket to sit on while fishing. The lessons will include information about fishing equipment, casting, proper fish handling, tying a knot, and baiting a hook.

MDC staff will provide all of the equipment, teaching tools and bait needed for the program. No fishing license is necessary for participants age 15 and below. Any participants above the age of 15 will need to bring their fishing license.

Registration is required for this event by Monday. For more information or to register, call the Missouri Department of Conservation Regional Office in West Plains at 417-256-7161. You can sign up with the front desk or ask for Mary Scott.
