HHS band director resigns, three elementary teachers hired by school board

Houston’s band director is leaving for a position closer to home.

Michael Roy resigned from Houston Schools last week for a job at Foley High School in Foley, Alab. His resignation was accepted last Tuesday by the school board during a special budget session. He was charged $1,000 for breaking contract.

The board also hired four teachers for the upcoming school year. Veronica Douglas, Lindsay Starr and Candace Mayberry were named elementary teachers and Donna Hoggatt was hired as a personal aide.

Roy led the band program for seven years in Houston. His new job is under three hours away from his family in Mississippi.

“I have to say a special thank you to all of the parents who have entrusted me with their children,” Roy said. “It has been my honor to have them in my classroom and part of my life. I will miss you all.”

Also during the brief meeting with a quorum of four members present, the board amended the 2016-’17 budget, transferred funds to follow state compliance and approved the financial expenditure report.
