Dixie Hamer Kirkman, 88, passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, in Springfield.

She was born Dec. 12, 1928, in Mountain View, Theodore “Ted” Hamer and Nancy Campbell Hamer Charles. She and Vernon Junior Kirkman were married July 17, 1950.

She graduated from Mountain View High School and attended Missouri State University for a time. She was employed as a secretary in Springfield for the Veterans Administration and later at the Mountain View High School.

She moved to Summersville to work at the Summersville State Bank as secretary to Lee Bell. She met her husband there.

She and her husband, Junior, joined First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and vacation bible school as long as her age permitted. She loved hymns. Beulah Land and Amazing Grace were favorites. She read her Bible daily until she could no longer do so.

She was an avid reader and gardener. She spent many hours in her yard, enjoying the flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Junior; her parents; a stepbrother, Thell Charles; and many friends.

Survivors include a son, Randy Kirkman of Summersville; a daughter, Carol Carr of Springfield; a sister, Theora Freeman of Nebraska; two grandsons; and other extended family members.

Services were Sunday, Sept. 3, at Summersville First Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Blaylock officiating. Burial was in Summersville City Cemetery.
