A survey of school enrollment shows a slight dip in the numbers on the first day in Texas County.

First-day school enrollment remained steady in Texas County, according to numbers released by the districts.

Students at county schools totaled 3,991, which was down 30 from the first day last year. Four districts showed increases: Houston, Raymondville, Success and Summersville.

At  Houston, the county’s largest district, there were 1,054 in classrooms. The most pronounced drop was Plato, where enrollment dropped 58 from the first day in 2016. Cabool was down 12 and Licking dropped 44.

At Houston, figures showed pre-school and elementary, 468; middle school, 230; and high school, 356. That’s up for each school, and the biggest increase among the county’s seven school districts.

Districts and their superintendents keep close track of enrollment totals because it directly affects state funding and other budget-related issues.
