John Henry Coats, 83, son of Ray Doyle and Helen (Shaffer) Coats Sr., was born Oct. 17, 1933, in Bucyrus, Mo. He passed away peacefully in his home on Sept. 23, 2017, with his family by his side.
He grew up in Bucyrus and attended a little country school in that area until the eighth grade. He married Patricia Ellis and had two boys, Mike and Dale. They later divorced. John married Diane Poulson in January 1981 and they had a daughter, Sonya.
He accepted the Lord as his Savior on Sept. 9, 2017, at his home.
John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Coats. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Diane Coats of the home; two sons, John Mike Coats and wife, Sharon, of West Plains, Mo., and Dale Coats of Bucyrus, Mo.; a daughter, Sonya Morton of Bucyrus, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Jacqueline Freeman and husband, Tim, of Sarcoxie, Mo., and Denise Shores and husband, Ronnie, of Norwood, Mo.; three sisters, Milly McKinney of Bucyrus, Mo., Edith Colborn and husband, Merle, of Cabool, Mo., and Betty Coatney and husband, Delmar, of Willow Springs, Mo.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter with another one on the way.
John was a lineman, working for PAR Electric, A&A Electric and retired from civil service in Ft. Wood. He was also a member of IBEW Union for many years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, elk hunting in Colorado and raising horses and cows. He was also a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. John was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed by all his loved ones.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at Evans Funeral Home with Delbert Gayer officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Pallbearers were James Coats, Levi Coats, Tom Coats, Tony Coats, David Coats and Michael Coats. Honorary pallbearers were Brady Coats and Garrett Coats.
