The Houston softball team rallied from a six-run deficit Wednesday afternoon to advance in district play.

The Lady Tigers scored nine times in the fifth and sixth innings for a 12-11 comeback victory against Seymour in the opening game of the Class 2 District 1 tournament.

No. 4 Houston (10-10) plays top-seeded Ava, which received a first-round bye, at 4 p.m. Thursday. Gainesville, which beat Hartville 17-15, plays No. 2 Mansfield in the other semifinal.

“In districts it’s survive and move on, and that’s exactly what we did,” HHS coach Brent Hall said. “We didn’t necessarily play well, but we battled back and found a way. We will have to play much better today in order to advance.”

Senior Jessica Schivitz had three hits to lead the Lady Tigers, who had at least one hit from all nine players and 15 hits total. Taylor Chipps, Kaitlyn Root, Madison Lawson and Jaden Stell had two hits apiece.

Trailing 9-3, Houston scored four times in the fifth to close the gap. Lawson, Curtis and Schivitz had RBI singles as the Lady Tigers sent nine batters to the plate.

After Seymour (6-14) scored two times in the top of the sixth to extend its advantage to 11-7, HHS answered with five runs. Chipps and Carly Crawford had RBI hits and Shelby Ozier put the Lady Tigers in front for good with a two-out, two-run single.

Houston senior Emily Roberts, who got the complete-game victory, forced a pair of flyouts and groundout in the top of the seventh to end the game.
