Sales tax collected by Houston merchants was down about 11.9 percent from the same monthly period a year ago, reports the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The monthly tally from a one-cent sales tax was $52,303, which was a decrease of $7,079 from September 2016. For the year, $535,553 has been collected. That’s down $12,868 for the year — or about 2.4 percent.

Retailers also collect two, quarter-cent sales taxes for capital improvements and transportation needs. Each contributed $13,073, which was down about $1,425 each for the month.
