The Houston High School volleyball team held its team banquet and announced 2017 team awards Monday night.
Lady Tigers coach Loran Richardson honored the team’s three seniors –– Brooke McCown, Chloe Hunninghake and Sevanna Rowland –– and named McCown the team’s most valuable player. Other individual awards included:
•Setting award: Alexis Choate (152 assists).
•Attacking award and MVP: McCown (100 kills, 3.45 per match)
•Defensive award and Tiger Heart award: Melody Buse (349 digs).
•Serving award: Rowland (19 aces, 110 points).
•Blocking award: Kennedy Campbell (22 blocks).
•Rookie of the year: Viviana Guerra.
•Tiger Hustle award: Destiny York.
Houston had a 5-25 record.
“We were up and down all season,” Richardson said. “We played a lot of big, tough teams at some of our tournaments. At times, I wasn’t sure which of my teams was going to show up. Sometimes we would look really strong and things would be going well and then we would turn around and fall apart.
“But, that is part of coaching high school sports. We won more games this year than we did last year and beat some teams we had lost to last year. So that’s a step in the right direction. Obviously, our record isn’t where we want it, but we are going to keep moving forward.”
Members of the JV team – York, Taylor Medlock, Saydie Hughes, Prairie Nunnery, Kellsi Gayer, Lexie Spratt and Baylee Weaver – received certificates at the banquet.
“We worked all season on developing mental toughness and learning how to fight through adversity,” Richardson said. “I hope that someday they look back and realize that this is about more than just winning.”
