Mercy Springfield is sending its president back to a full-time medical practice role and is keeping its interim leader in his position for the foreseeable future.

Jon Swope, the interim president, will continue to oversee operations in Springfield in addition to his role as a regional president with Mercy, according to a news release.

Alan Scarrow, a neurosurgeon who had been president for the past three years, will return to practicing medicine full-time, according to the release.

Scarrow “has been instrumental in Mercy’s selection as a center of excellence for what has become a nationally recognized destination medicine program,” Mercy Springfield said in a news release. “He has also provided key leadership in Mercy’s direct contracts for healthcare services with area companies, providing greater value for the companies and better health for their employees.”

Mercy has been fighting to keep its Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. A federal agency threatened to cut funding amid concerns about how some hospital staff had treated violent patients and invalids with mental health problems.

The hospital has fired a dozen employees. A former security guard said he and others “were acting in good faith” while dodging thrown “jugs of pee” in some situations.

The hospital was removed from “immediate jeopardy” status in late September.
