Two people were injured Monday afternoon on Highway 17 when a vehicle was stopped in the roadway for a deer.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Shirley E. Lacey, 69, of Peoria, Ill., was traveling northbound four miles east of Houston when she stopped for the animal. Her 2007 Chevrolet Aveo was then struck in the rear by a 2016 Ford Focus driven by Courtney N. Tierce, 28, of Hartshorn.

Both occupants, who were wearing seat belts, were taken to Texas County Memorial Hospital. Lacey had moderate injuries. Tierce’s injuries were minor.

Both vehicles were totaled in the noon wreck. The Texas County Rescue Team assisted at the scene.
