Several new political filings were announced. Ray Dow Clayton filed for sheriff on the Democratic Ticket; G.H. “Doc” Little on the Republican Ticket. Ernest “Porky” Stricklin, Democrat, filed for the office of treasurer. Alvin Halstead, Summersville Republican, filed for the county court, Eastern District.

Committee members soliciting stock in a development corporation to bring a nursing home to Houston reported that sales were brisk. Cash purchases and pledges amounted to $8,000 or about one-third the sum needed as the community’s share of the project.

About 25 Texas Countians were in St. Louis to hear an address by Gov. Ronald Reagan of California at a Republican rally.

Troy Castleman was named president of the Big Piney Sportsman’s Club. Other officers: vice president, Everett Mayberry; secretary, Charles Riley, Licking; treasurer, Paul Holbrook; board member, Mike Becker and Kenneth Hobson, Licking.

Mrs. Jack Downing resigned her position at H.D. Lee’s Houston plant and moved to Columbia, where her husband has been employed at a department store. Another Lee employee, Milton W. Littlefield, engineer, has been transferred to a Lee plant in Guntersville, Ala.

Bradley Mitchell, Houston, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He received a bachelor’s degree from SMS. Mitchell will be assigned on a temporary basis to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.

Dr. T.J. Burns, formerly of Houston, has left Dallas to open an office in Springfield.

Earl Wilson, farmer and member of the Texas County Court, received national recognition as the Missouri leader in registration of Poland China hogs.
