Military veteran

Marvin “Nelson” Davis, 83, of Hannibal, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Moriarty, N.M., son of Marvin and Bessie Opal Meadows Davis. He and Joyce Elizabeth Blevins were married March 4, 1960.

He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1952. He completed two years of college at the University of New Mexico.

He served in the Army in Fairbanks, Alaska. He obtained the rank of Specialist Rank 3 and was recognized as battalion soldier of the month.

He retired from Hannibal LaGrange University after 16 years as superintendent of maintenance.

Upon retirement, he volunteered at several Texas Baptists camps, supervising construction and maintenance projects.

He was a carpenter and enjoyed making furniture and remodeling building and homes. He also enjoyed crappie fishing, especially at Crystal Blue Lake. His most enjoyable time was spent with family and grandchildren.

He was an actively involved with the Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry. He was a member at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hannibal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Downs; and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; five children, Brenda Rippeto, Wayne Davis, Connie Smith, Everett Davis and Boyd Davis; two sisters, Geneva Johnston, and Peggy Hall; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were Friday, Dec. 29, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hannibal. Burial was in Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal under the direction of James O’Donnell Funeral Home.
