Moss' contract extended with Houston Schools

The Houston school board has unanimously extended the contract of its superintendent.

The contract of Dr. Allen Moss was lengthened through the 2019-’20 school year at Tuesday’s monthly meeting. Moss is completing his second year at Houston Schools.

“I am excited for this commitment and trust from the board,” Moss said. “I want to say thank you to them for that.”

Moss said his first year in the district was one of learning and building relationships while also making some changes. He said he is proud that elementary and middle school students –– soon to be high school as well ––– have access to STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) curriculum. He is also excited about the expanded vocational opportunities that have been provided through his tenure with the South Central Career Center in West Plains.

Among his current goals, Moss said, are improving test scores, staff retention, employee salaries, improving programs and facilities and creating more opportunities for students.

“Houston Schools has great kids and great staff members that I think have not yet experienced their full potential,” Moss said. “I want the Houston School District to be the standard that all other districts in the area look to, and I want to represent the district and community in such a way that reflects that standard for several years to come. My family and I look forward to becoming more and more a part of the community.”

Also at the meeting, the board accepted the retirement of Sherry Gatlin, the middle and high school librarian, and resignation of bookkeeper Christa Hinkle. Gatlin will conclude her career at the end of the current school year while Hinkle will depart Feb. 28.

Barbara Clayton was hired as her replacement.

Other moves by the board members during the brief meeting included:

• Recognizing Houston High School junior Taylor Buckner as the new student liaison to the board.

• Approving the Fuels for Schools Grant Option 1 as presented by Mike Morris of the Missouri Department of Conservation at the December board meeting.

• Receiving thanks from Moss for their time service to the school district. Board members are Jo Holland, Christie Koch, Stacie Ely, Jennifer Scheets, Curtis Hubbs, Darren Ice and Leon Slape.
