The Houston school board extended the contracts of its four principals during Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
Elementary principal Jody Jarrett, middle school principal Amber Stephens and high school assistant principal Eric Sloan were unanimously given contracts through the 2019-’20 school year. High school principal Amy Smith was also extended through the same year with a 6-1 vote. Board member Darren Ice dissented.
Jarrett, Stephens and Sloan are completing their third years in their respective roles with the district. Smith is finishing her second.
Also during the four-hour meeting, board members:
•Approved the 2018-’19 school calendar as presented by Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent. The first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 16. The last day is May 21.
•Heard and approved the 2018 summer school terms from Moss. Sessions will be 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. May 21 through June 15. Limited transportation will be provided at pickup points. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
•Named Sloan the high school track coach for the current school year.
•Accepted the resignation of Jode Huffman as assistant middle school volleyball coach at the end of the school year.
•Hired Mary Odle for part-time bookkeeper training in the central office.
•Heard from patron Christie Koch related to expanding the restrooms at the football field. Koch said she will work on ideas as well as ways to assist with costs.
•Received information related to FFA Week from Katelyn Hodges, high school agriculture teacher and FFA adviser, who was also accompanied by students.
•Approved the academic team making a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute, Ind., following a presentation from adviser Jason Pounds.
•Accepted a bid for $5,806.18 from Wiley Fence Company for fencing around the elementary playground as well as a bid from J.L. Friend Lumber for new interior doors for high school and middle school classrooms. The $14,535 project is for 42 doors with security glass.
•Recognized middle school student of the month Karly Drake as well as nominees Macy Mills and Daniil Razov. The high school student of the month, Brook Ozier, was recognized but not present.
