Military veteran

Melvin Lavern Young, 74, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2016, at his home in Houston.

He was born June 26, 1943, in Summersville, son of Fred and Mabel Young. He and Linda Morton were married Aug. 25, 1990.

He joined the Air Force in January 1965 and was stationed in Wethersfield, England, where he served as a parachute rigger. After his tours of duty, he joined the Army Reserves and served many weekends.

He retired as a mechanic from Union Pacific Railroad. He loved to help others mechanic and fix the impossible.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roy Young, Fred Allen Young and Elmer Dewayne Young; and a sister, Grace Riegle.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Young of Houston; three sons, Danny Lavern Young of St. Charles, Paul Melvin Young of Wright City and Bradley Shane White of Eminence; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ruth Bell of Summersville, Bonnie Radtke of Rolling Meadow, Ill., Eunice Young of Houston, Shirley Ireland of St. Charles and Ruby Diesel of Springfield; a brother, Larry Young of Oakland, Ark.; and a host of other family members.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Medley officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Summersville City Cemetery.
