A crash north of Licking early Monday damaged 186 feet of guardrail and seriously injured a trailer-truck driver who was ejected from his vehicle.
Tpr. Travis Brown said a southbound 2011 Volkswagen CC Sport was stopped on the shoulder after running out of gas about five miles north of Licking on U.S 63. A 2017 Freightliner hauling milk — and driven by Gary L. Fetter, 66, of Haubstadt, Ind. — struck the Volkswagen, pushing it off the right side. The truck continued south and traveled off the roadway, struck the guard rail and overturned at about 5:50 a.m. It was partially loaded.
Fetter was flown by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The other driver was not injured. Brown said the truck driver was not wearing a seat belt; the other driver was not injured and was wearing a seat belt.
Assisting at the scene were Sgt. George Falterman, the Licking Fire Department and the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The trailer-tractor unit was totaled; the Volkswagen had moderate damage.
