Blue is the color of choice April 2 for Worldwide Autism Awareness Day.
The Texas County Health Department encourages the public to wear blue as part of the “light it up blue” campaign to help spread awareness of autism.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral issues. People with ASD may interact, behave and learn in ways that are different from other people, their abilities ranging from gifted to severely challenged. Â
The health department’s WIC program uses the “Learn the Signs, Act Early” materials to help parents be aware of healthy developmental milestones. Milestones are age related skills such as taking a first step, smiling for the first time and waving “bye-bye.” While early identification of ASD and management in children offers a better outcome, many can wait up to 18 months before seeing a specialist for an autism evaluation.
Texas County Memorial Hospital physician William Wright M.D., is an ECHO Autism STAT Program provider, which can help local children and families access these services sooner.
