Houston High School principal Amy Smith has resigned.
Smith’s resignation was accepted last Thursday night by the school board during the closed session of its monthly meeting. She was under contract through 2020.
“I have greatly appreciated the opportunity Houston has given to my family and myself,” said Smith, who will become principal at Diamond High School. “My time at Houston has given me immeasurable experiences, and I have become attached to the students and faculty here at Houston. Houston High School has grown through hard work from faculty members and is able to offer many resources to our students. I hope the positive path HHS is now on will continue in the future.”
Smith was hired in 2016 as HHS principal to replace Charlie Malam, who retired. She was previously the assistant principal at Moberly Middle School.
Smith’s husband, Jeremy, resigned the previous month as director of the Exceptional Child Cooperative in Houston. He accepted a position in the Mount Vernon R-5 School District.
Amy Smith is the second principal that will depart from Houston Schools following the 2018-19 school year. Amber Stephens resigned in March as middle school principal after accepting a position as elementary counselor and special education process coordinator in her hometown of Licking.
Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent, said the board extended a contract offer to a candidate to fill Stephens’ vacancy during a special session Monday night. An announcement will be made later this week, he said.
