Any Mizzou fan can tell you about the iconic “M” Memorial Stadium.
For those who don’t know, here’s the description from Missouri’s official site: The landmark, formed by whitewashed rocks, is 90 feet wide and 95 feet high and it was created by Mizzou students in 1927.
It is located at the north end zone, and that’s key to this story.
That’s because one famous Mizzou grad was a bit confused when she saw a photo from Saturday’s spring game of the south end zone, which is the site of a major construction project.
U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat from Missouri, lamented the loss of the “M” when she tweeted a photo of the work being done at Memorial Stadium.
Fortunately, Mizzou was able to correct her.
McCaskill’s tweet: This photo makes me kinda sad. I grew up watching Mizzou games from the “rocks.” I know it’s progress but still gonna be weird to be at Faurot without the white M.
Mizzou’s reply: Don’t be sad, the rocks are fine.
McCaskill should have left it that, but then she tweeted this: So I was quickly informed this is the south end construction. Whew. But wait I thought we just redid that end a few years ago?
Nope. Before the 2013 season, Mizzou renovated the press box and moved the “M” closer to the field prior and started expansion on the east side a year later. The south end zone project is scheduled to be finished on Aug. 30, 2019.
The mistakes in the tweets and the perception that politicians are out of touch led to some pointed responses on Twitter, including one from Michael Sykuta: As if we needed proof of how out of touch our senator is. Thanks for the reminder Sen. McCaskill. Please visit campus more often so you might have a clue.
