50 YEARS AGO
Honor students were recognized at a banquet hosted by The Bank of Houston. Dr. Jerry B. Poe, director of Breech School of Business Administration at Drury College in Springfield was the guest speaker.
Names of the top 10 students were released. Included were: Muriel Dablemont, valedictorian; Steve Hutcheson, salutatorian; Mike McKinney, Sara Hutcheson, Beth Ijames, Pat McKinney, Janet Crowley, Bill Arthur, Dixie Hart Edgar and Frances Connolly. Ninety-one seniors were to receive diplomas at commencement.
Susan Elmore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Elmore, received an E rating in poetry reading at the state speech festival in Columbia.
Pfc. Robert Romines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Romines of Houston, has been wounded in fighting in Vietnam. He listed in satisfactory condition in a U.S. hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. and Mrs. Romines plan to fly to Honolulu to spend a few days with their son.
Roger Lee Maxwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Maxwell of Houston, is the winner of the MFA College Scholarship. Maxwell will attend Mineral Area College at Flat River.
The cornerstone at the Texas County Memorial Hospital was moved to the new wing. Completion came Friday to a new 24-bed addition.
Leland Brady, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Brady, was named valedictorian at Plato High School. Salutatorian was Lanell Groves, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carrel Groves.
