Houston Schools

The Houston school board dissolved itself and reorganized Thursday night following the April election.

Incumbents Leon Slape and Stacie Ely, who were re-elected, were sworn in. The board chose to assign the same officers in Jo Holland (president), Jennifer Scheets (vice president), Slape (secretary/treasurer) and Tanya Bathon (executive board secretary).

During the 4 1/2 hour meeting, board members:

•Accepted resignations from Michelle “Mickie” Abiyou (first grade teacher), Sacha Sanders (high school science), Shannon Smart (Exceptional Child Cooperative), Sadie Ashworth (elementary paraprofessional), Vincent McKee (middle and high school ISS) and Sheryl Hock (elementary Title I teacher). Hock is retiring.

•Employed John Jordan as early childhood process coordinator for the Exceptional Child Cooperative for the 2018-’19 school year as well as Mason Miller (middle school assistant softball coach) and Clay Ashworth (middle school assistant baseball coach) for the current school year. Jordan’s stipend was set at $6,000.

•Were addressed by parents of a student for nearly one hour related to an “appeal.” The board unanimously denied the appeal.

•Approved renewing insurance for district employees following a health risk assessment.

•Set fixed stipends of $1,500 for seclusion/restraint trainers at the Exceptional Child Cooperative.

•Heard information from patron Christie Koch – presented by Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent – related to pricing and plans to contract new restrooms at the high school football field. No decision was made.

•Selected Paragon, of Springfield, as the architect for the boiler project on campus.

•Were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by middle school student of the month nominees Stone Jackson and Sheldon Starr as well as high school student of the month Jessi
