Houston’s Thomas Smith will play in the state golf championship finals.
Smith shot a 27-over-par 88 in the Class 2 sectionals in Jackson for a top-20 finish. He was among seven golfers who tied for 13th place. Houston’s Parker Ward shot a plus-48.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 state championships are May 14-15 at meadow Lakes Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.
Smith and Ward both qualified for sectionals with top 25 district finishes. Smith was eighth in Class 2 District 2 at 23 over and Ward finished 21st at 38-over.
Houston finished fifth in the district team standings with a score of 477. Willow Springs won the team title at 351, followed by Cuba (420), St. James (420), Liberty (430) and HHS.
Cary Logan finished 28th at 50-over to just miss the cut. Luca Kiusle shot an 82-over and Samuel Davidson was 99-over for HHS.
Also at sectionals, James Swan, of Licking, finished tied for eighth place at 23-over. Willow Springs won the team event by 32 strokes.
