Houston’s Thomas Smith saved his best round yet for the state golf championships.

Smith fired a 21-over-par 93 on Monday in the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 finals at Meadow Lakes Acres County Club in New Bloomfield. He is tied for 57th place entering Tuesday’s final round.

Smith was the lone HHS player to qualify for state.

Hank Lierz and Brooks Jungbluth, both of Bishop LeBlond, sit atop the opening-day leaderboard. Lierz shot a 69 while Jungsbluth fired a 71. Their school leads the team standings by 33 strokes.

The highest local finisher was Liberty’s Matthew Price, who shot an 82 for 15th place. Brandon Marcak of Willow Springs shot an 85 and sits in 26th place.

Licking’s James Swan is tied for 60th place after an opening-round 94.
