The winning entry in last year's inaugural Pirates of the Piney regatta.

Texas County Memorial Hospital will host its second annual “Pirates of the Piney Cardboard Regatta” to benefit its surgery center at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at Boiling Springs Resort.

Among the activities will be a cardboard boat race, rubber duck race and live music by Jason Allen Burbey. Concessions will be available from Mike & Julie’s Smoked Meats.

Anyone can register a team and enter the boat race, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for people’s choice, most creative, winning time and best sinking ship. The entry fee is $50.

Races will be held in the “buccaneer’s class” for ages 10-16 and “captain’s class” for ages 17 and up.

The portion of the boat that is in contact with water must be made entirely of corrugated cardboard. Wood, metal, Styrofoam, rubber inflatable devices and other materials that would provide buoyancy and/or other materials that would aid in flotation or make a hull rigid are prohibited.

All boats will go through a pre-race inspection to ensure rules compliance. For a complete list of rules, see the electronic version of this press release on the TCMH website under “Latest News.”

The duck race will begin immediately following the boat race. Rubber ducks can be purchased on site for $5.
