The second annual Pirates of the Piney Cardboard Regatta, held June 16 at Boiling Springs Resort, raised $3,661 for the new surgery center at Texas County Memorial Hospital.
Nine participants were part of the boat race, including hospital employees, their families and some community members. All participants built and decorated their own boats prior to the event.
The race consisted of three preliminary heats, with the winners meeting in a final heat to claim the title of “Fastest Ship.” The title went to Houston residents John and Liz McCarty. Award-winners in other categories:
• Most Creative Boat: Connie Brooks and Kayla Brawley.
• People’s Choice: Jenny and Hannah Sawyer.
• Bloody Bones (most dramatic sinking ship): Dr. Jason Loden and his brother, Joseph Loden.
The McCartys sold their winning vessel to raise more money for the surgery center. John and Jenny Sawyer bought it for $200.
After the boat race, a rubber duck race raised more funds and cash prizes were awarded to winners. Evania Ryan was the champion, followed by Dacy Kirkman and Ellen Willis.
This year’s event raised approximately $500 more than last year’s inaugural version.
“This event was created as a fun and different fundraiser to support the hospital,” said TCMH EMS director and event planner Bill Bridges. “It’s a grassroots, employee-run fundraiser that helps the hospital and, in turn, patient care.”
Bridges thanked Boiling Springs Resort, Piney River Brewing Co., Grellner Distributing and State Farm Insurance agent Justin Shelby for their support.
