University of Missouri Extension will host a pasture walk starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Tommy and Helen Sanders farm, 5969 Raney St., Hartville.
Summer annual forages will be the primary topic for the day,” said Ted Probert, dairy specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
The Sanders family plans to show several forage options including BMR sorghumsudan, crabgrass and hemp.
“We have heard bits of information about sun hemp for a couple of years now, but this is the first season that seed has been readily available locally,” Probert said. “Tommy is one of the first in the area to grow it, and he plans to share the results he has seen after grazing his sun hemp two to three times this summer.”
The availability of forage crop seed for this fall’s planting season will also be discussed.
“With drought conditions prevailing over much of the nation, I anticipate strong demand for winter annuals and possibly perennial seeds,” Probert said.
