TEXAS COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL
The Texas County Retired Teachers and School Personnel met Sept. 10 at First Baptist Church in Houston.
Members participated in some “get reacquainted” games.
The meeting was called to order by Wilda McNiell. Karen Parker led members through a devotion with “Eleven Signs You’ve Been a Teacher Too Long,” as well as sharing an article by Sharon Slovic about what it’s like to be a retired teacher.
Jeanette Hale read the minutes from the May 14 meeting, which were approved.
Member services chair Bonnie Carter reported that there were 31 paid members. New membership dues for the upcoming year will be collected at the next meeting.
Fifty canned goods and $20 were brought to donate to the Cabool food pantry. Abby Vereecke from Cabool was one of the education scholarship recipients awarded by MRTA.
Community services chair Kay Honeycutt reported two new members, Sherry and Linda, in attendance. Kay will bring lists for members to report volunteer hours to the next meeting.
Members are still collecting the following: Boxtops for Education, can tabs, canned items and cash donations.
Protective services committee chair Jay Frost contacted Angie Quinlan from the chamber of commerce about the numbers of reports they have received related to unwanted solicitations (spam). He had a copy of the list for anyone who was interested. Public services committee chair Joyce Jones asked members to bring $20 each to the Oct. 8 meeting for the Region 10 Fall Banquet.
The Region 10 fall meeting is 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the First Christian Church in Cabool. Savor Grill and Barbecue of Houston will cater the meal. The deadline for reservations is Oct. 8. Joyce asked for members to help set up the church on Thursday, Oct. 17. Donna and Janice are coordinating the silent auctions. Any donations of items will be gladly accepted from members for the auction.
Wilda reported that the mural made by Restorative Justice has been completed and delivered. The 8-foot by 20-foot mural will be used as the focal point for the meeting and will serve as a great backdrop for photos.
Jeanie Beltz moved to donate $75 to Bob and Karen Parker for a metal piece of artwork made and designed by her husband to be included in the silent auction. Kay seconded the motion.
Wilda attended the state delegate meeting Sept. 11.
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 8.
